Technology can be Transformative

The team from OMG Tech came to show us how "Technology can be transformative"

For openers, our learners could create tech like this:

Why wouldn't we give them the tools and the learning to do this?

Focus on the Share

Learn, Create, Share | Kia Ako, Kia Hanga, Kia Tohatoha

Share

We were given a resource as a starting point and asked to create a site for an audience.

We were asked to make the site multimodal; using different modes to get the message across.
The aim of being multimodal is to increase:
  • Engagement
  • Personalised learning
  • Acceleration
  • Empowerment
My audience is an NCEA level 1 or Year 11 Science class.

I am focussed on empowering the learners to create digital learning objects to teach others.
My aim is to encourage personalised learning by giving the resources and a wide enough brief with no restrictions on how the learning is presented.
I have hands-on activities along with theoretical learning with content that I hope is engaging.
Acceleration is optional. I have added Can-Dos and Must-Dos.

Please test out my site and give me feedback as to how this might be improved.
(still working on it as this post is published)

Creating to Learn

Whether on YouTube, drawings, slides, we are all creative and can create.

Live Streaming

Might be your class, a rugby game or cross country live-streamed on YouTube.
A camera, drone and streaming encoder along with live-streaming set up on YouTube channel.

Kent Somerville made it look simple and oh so effective. I think everyone in the room wanted to do it too!

YouTube Channel

Thanks for sharing all your expertise, Fiona Grant.
The settings for the Channel and 'the why' for these settings was worthwhile for me especially the upload defaults.

Drawings - one tool to rule them all

Started a portrait using polyline in drawing. Bailed!!
I still think Drawing tool is the best.

Slides Animation Learning

More opportunity to practice and learn how Dorothy does it.

Creating our Digital Pepeha

A good opportunity for me to update and include my Gisborne living arrangement!

Testing it out with Learners

Learners in a class was asked to volunteer to work with me during their Health class. Six learners volunteered - 5 girls and 1 boy.
Three of these learners were very familiar with online learning and cybersmart learning as they came from schools from within the cluster of schools I work in.
One learner had used a chromebook in another school.

We discussed ways their learning might be helped in the context of cybersmart learning. Their ideas are shown below:
  • working in groups with people you don't know so well
  • take one on one time with teacher to talk about what to work on
  • build stronger relationships with students and teachers - one on one talks, things you want to change or you're not happy about
Learners created a digital learning object about their learning and posted this on their blogs.

Impact Stories from Kootuitui ki Papakura

We were asked to present some impact stories from each of our Manaiakalani Outreach clusters to the Principals and Leaders of Manaiakalani Schools.

Kootuitui ki Papakura cluster has impacted; learners, classroom teachers, leaders, schools and whānau. We are continuing to learn together in terms of the learning, the PLD,  the GSuite and other digital tools as well as clustering. It is an exciting journey.

Thoughts on Creating

Angela Gattung and I created this video clip as a demo for teachers as we are asking them to reflect on some digital learning objects with these six questions:

Infographic about sharing on blogs

Students are learning about using creative tools to share their learning. Today we were learning about using Piktochart to show what we choose to share about ourselves on our blogs.

Here is my infographic - information and graphics shared in a simple way. We learnt about colour and fonts as well as some ideas about alignment.

Infographic about Learn Create Share

As students were learning about creating an infographic, I decided to create one as well. We learnt about how to attribute images, how to use colours and fonts, and how to snap together text boxes and images. Also how to use information to share as part of an inforgraphic.

My learning in the 'Learn Create Share' pedagogy

Create

Influences by Sir Ken Robinson who advocates opportunities for expression. Allowing, encouraging and expecting creation as part of the learning process.

A quote from his blog:  Creativity is about fresh thinking. It doesn’t have to be new to the whole of humanity - though that’s always a bonus - but certainly to the person whose work it is.

The idea is to use the opportunities that technology allows to show learning in ways that were not available before. This links to the SAMR model of redefining what we are doing, not just doing the same things we have always done but now digitally - substitution. Rather doing something completely new that we were unable to do before - redefinition.

Dorothy Burt sourced this thinglink below and unpacked the SAMR ladder very clearly on her blog.

I really like the idea that teachers start the process and then get out of the way of the students learning, as noted under Redefinition on the thinglink. I suspect it can be hard to do but a good discipline. Those learners who excel often do their best (most / all?) learning outside of school in a traditional classroom. So to give tools and set rich tasks... makes sense. There needs to be entry points for all learners at all levels so applying Universal Design for Learning principles makes sense to me. If I can 'design from the outset for the learners from the edges, rather than for the average and then adapt.' (from a UDL webinar facilitated by Nathaniel Louwrens) then I will have designed for all learners.

Teachers need to be given the opportunity and expectation to do use the SAMR ladder in a structured way. Yes mistakes will be made but ones that can be learnt from, a slight correction made and move on, then building on what is working well. I find it exciting to see teachers discovering, using and improving what works well in a supported environment and they in turn find it satisfying to see significant student progress in learning.

Share

To an authentic audience. The initial audience can be classmates, teacher, school, parents. The more authentic audience is the wider world, e.g. sharing via  TV or the internet.

We have a very simple definition and a deliberate plan of attack to help students grow one [authentic audience].

An authentic audience is people who choose to listen to you.

And if they pay to listen to you then I guess they are even more authentic! From a Dorothy Burt blogspot.

Learn Create Share

A place to start is the Learn Create Share (LCS) pedagogy as a linear model using the SAMR ladder. Hence a scaffolded framework is a good place to start to help teachers move practice to be above the line.

Eventually there is a shift to a spiral model where students might create to learn or share to learn. This
post by +Fiona Grant  shares the content of a professional learning day where the teachers explored the idea of Create to Learn.
